“We all love to support our community. I started out coding with whatever free tools and services I could scrape together, so this one is personal to me.”

What's covered

Self-hosted, on us

Free for one project, $1 a month if you run more. Normally $10 a month.

Your AWS bill stays yours

Your app runs in your own AWS account, so AWS bills you for servers and databases. New accounts can get up to $200 in credits, and startups can apply for more through AWS Activate.

Self-hosted only

The program covers the Self-hosted plan. Fully managed isn't part of it.

Who it's for

Students

You study at a school or a university.

What we'll ask for: Your school email address and the name of your school. The voucher goes to that address.

How long: 12 months, then you apply again.

Open source projects

You maintain a public open source project.

What we'll ask for: A link to the repository or to the project's website.

How long: No end date.

AWS Activate startups

Your startup is a member of AWS Activate.

What we'll ask for: The 12-digit ID of the AWS account that holds your Activate credits.

How long: 12 months, then you apply again.

Non-profit and scientific projects

You run a non-profit, or a scientific or research project.

What we'll ask for: A link to the organization or to the project's website.

How long: No end date.

Good to know

  • Renewing is easy. For 12-month sponsorships, we'll email you a month before it ends. Just apply again.
  • We trust you. Vouchers go out right away and we only check later. Please keep your details honest so we can keep this program running.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What does the sponsorship cover?

Our fee on Self-hosted: free with one project, $1 a month if you run more. AWS still bills you for the servers and databases you run, and AWS credits can cover that.

Do you review my application?

Not before you get your voucher. It's emailed right away and we check applications afterwards, so please keep your details honest.

Why do you ask for a card?

It keeps throwaway accounts out. Nothing is charged while you run one project; with more, it pays the $1 a month.

What happens after 12 months?

Students and AWS Activate startups are sponsored for 12 months. We email you a month before it ends, and if you apply again in the last two months it carries on from the end date. If you do nothing, your apps keep running and Self-hosted costs the standard $10 a month.

Is Fully managed sponsored too?

No. Fully managed runs on infrastructure we pay AWS for, so it costs what it costs.

I applied twice. Which voucher is valid?

The same one. Applying again before you use your voucher sends it to you again.

My voucher didn't arrive.

Check your spam folder. If it's not there, apply again with the same address after ten minutes and we'll send it again.
