* Bigger servers, more servers, bigger databases and bigger file storage add to your total, see prices in the tables below.

What a server costs

Each running copy of your app is one server, so three Small instances cost three Small servers, and you can run 1 to 20 per app. On Fully managed a Nano is $10 and every other size is the AWS price plus $5. A bigger server replaces the Nano in your plan and adds the difference: a Small instead of a Nano adds $10. Another server is simply its price. The smaller sizes share a processor with other workloads and can briefly burst above their normal speed.

Server sizes with Amazon Lightsail list price and the Fully managed price per month
SizevCPURAM Self-hosted: AWS bills youFully managed: per server
Nano 0.25 (shared) 512 MB $7/month $10/month
Micro 0.25 (shared) 1 GB $10/month $15/month
Small 0.50 (shared) 1 GB $15/month $20/month
Medium 1 2 GB $40/month $45/month
Large 2 4 GB $80/month $85/month
XLarge 4 8 GB $160/month $165/month

What a database costs

Managed Postgres, encrypted at rest. High availability adds a standby in a second zone that takes over if the main database fails, and doubles the price. On Fully managed, databases cost the AWS price with no surcharge.

What a small Django app costs

One Nano server and one Micro Postgres database are enough for a side project or an early product. Here is the monthly bill on each plan. Prices exclude tax.

A busier app: two Medium servers and a database

The same rules with a bigger setup. Nothing is free: every server and every database is its own line on the bill, and the platform fee is the only line that does not grow with them.

LineSelf-hostedFully managed
Django Cloud fee$10$4 platform fee
2 Medium servers$80 to AWS$90
1 Micro Postgres database$15 to AWS$15
Total$105$109

For comparison, AWS charges $95 for those same servers and that database in your own account. On Self-hosted that is what AWS bills you, and the $10 is ours.

There is no separate AWS bill on Fully managed. Other server sizes are priced in the table above.

The total does not include a few cents per build (AWS CodeBuild in your account), snapshots, taxes or any AWS charges outside the items listed. AWS credits can reduce the AWS part on Self-hosted, as described below. This is a worked example, not a quote.

AWS credits

Start for free with AWS Activate credits

On the Self-hosted plan your app runs in your own AWS account, so AWS credits can pay for it. New AWS accounts can get up to $200 in credits, which is the amount most side projects can count on. Startups can also apply for up to $1,000 through AWS Activate, but AWS decides who qualifies and can change the terms.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What does the subscription cover?

On Self-hosted the $10 covers our part: builds, releases, rollbacks, the dashboard and the CLI. AWS bills you directly for the servers and databases. On Fully managed the AWS infrastructure is included: the $29 is a $4 platform fee, a Nano server and a Micro database, and a bigger server or database adds the difference.

Are AWS prices fixed?

No. AWS sets and can change its list prices. The AWS column on this page is the Lightsail list price we last checked; the AWS pricing page is the authority.

What else might AWS charge me on Self-hosted?

Builds run in AWS CodeBuild in your account and cost a few cents each. Database snapshots are billed at AWS storage prices, including the final snapshot kept when you delete a database. For anything else, such as data transfer, check the AWS pricing pages.

Can I pay less?

We make exceptions for students, open source projects, non-profit and scientific projects and startups in AWS Activate: Self-hosted is covered, and costs $1 a month once you have more than one project. You apply with proof and the voucher is emailed to you. See Sponsorship. Fully managed is never sponsored.

Can AWS credits pay for it?

On Self-hosted your app runs in your own AWS account, so AWS credits can apply. New AWS accounts can get credits and startups can apply for AWS Activate. AWS decides who qualifies and can change the terms.

What happens if a payment fails?

Stripe retries the card for a while. If the subscription ends up unpaid or canceled, new deploys are refused until you update your card. We do not stop apps that are already running.
